Born in Dougherty, Iowa
Resided in Johnston, IA
Gordon Dean Jorgensen, 94, of Johnston, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of love, laughter, music, and memories that will be cherished by generations of family and friends.
Gordon was born on September 13, 1932, in Dougherty, Iowa, to Hans Peter Jorgensen and Henrietta Wilhelmina (Oeltjunbruns) Jorgensen. He grew up in Thornton and Swaledale, Iowa, graduating from Swaledale High School in 1950. He later earned his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation through Drake University.
In March 1952, Gordon enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving aboard the USS Point Cruz (CVE-119), a ship he knew as “My Fair Lady.” During his service, he attained the rank of Aviation Storekeeper First Class (AK1) and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He separated from active service in March 1956.
On June 9, 1952, Gordon married the love of his life, Charlene Lois (Riel) Jorgensen, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together, they shared more than 74 years of marriage, building a beautiful life centered around faith, family, love, and a lifetime of memories. Their enduring devotion to one another was an example of lasting love for the generations that followed.
Gordon enjoyed a successful career in the insurance industry, including serving as Vice President of Continental Western Insurance Company. A man of many talents and interests, he was also a pilot who found freedom and adventure in the skies.
But perhaps one of the things Gordon will be remembered for most was his love of music.
A lifelong musician, Gordon played the accordion, banjo, ukulele, and even the spoons. Music was simply part of who he was. Whether he was singing, whistling, entertaining with Jorgie’s Band, playing for family and friends, or joining fellow musicians during winters in Arizona, he had a remarkable ability to bring people together through a song. His family often joked that you could hear him coming long before you could see him, thanks to his nearly constant singing or whistling.
His music filled basements, churches, family gatherings, celebrations, and countless hearts. It was one of the many gifts he shared so freely with those around him.
Gordon was a man of faith who loved God and his family deeply. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a lifetime of stories, and a knack for offering advice, whether it had been requested or not. He enjoyed gardening, spending time outdoors, and creating memories with the people he loved.
To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was so much more than simply Grandpa. He was the familiar voice greeting them with a warm “Hi, sweetheart,” the comforting hug, the mischievous sense of humor, and the steady presence that made ordinary moments extraordinary. He was the grandpa who could take you flying in an airplane, entertain an entire room with his music, and make you feel loved just by being there.
His final days were spent in the compassionate care of the staff at the VA Community Living Center, where the love and respect he had earned throughout his life were evident in the care he received. Even as his ability to communicate faded, music remained a connection to the world around him—a fitting reflection of a life so beautifully filled with it.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Hans Peter and Henrietta Jorgensen; and his six siblings, Lois Zobel, Mary Ann Motter, Robert Jorgensen, Hans “Red” Jorgensen, Earl Jorgensen, and Richard Jorgensen.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 74 years, Charlene; his three sons, Gary Jorgensen, Terry “TJ” Jorgensen, and Jeffrey Jorgensen (Fran); his four grandchildren, Taunie Jorgensen, Michelle (Jeremiah) Melson, Sandi (Ryan) Dunbar, and Eric Jorgensen; and his six great-grandchildren, Katie, AJ, Ethan, Lucas, Timberlee, and Rainee. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Gordon leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured simply in years, accomplishments, or possessions. His legacy lives in the family he loved, the values he passed down, the laughter he inspired, the stories that will continue to be told, and the music that will forever remind those who knew him of a life well lived.
After 94 years, his song may have come to an end here on earth, but its melody will continue to play in the hearts of everyone who loved him.
A funeral service honoring Gordon’s life will be held on Monday, October 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, with military honors. A reception and time of fellowship will follow at the American Legion Hall in Van Meter, Iowa.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, caregivers, and staff at the VA Community Living Center for the extraordinary compassion, dignity, and kindness they showed Gordon and his family during his final days.
