Burial Merchandise

Burial merchandise includes two main elements: outer burial containers and caskets. Each serves a different purpose. At Iles, our role is to help families understand what is required, what is optional, and how each choice fits into the ceremony, the cemetery, and your budget. We walk families through options with clear explanations and no pressure, so decisions feel confident and aligned with what matters most to you.

Caskets

A casket is both functional and ceremonial. It holds your loved one with dignity and is present during visitation, services, and burial. Beyond that, it is a personal choice, not a requirement to express grief or love in a certain way.

Materials and Styles

Caskets are available in a wide range of materials and finishes, including:

  • Wood caskets, such as pine, oak, or mahogany
  • Metal caskets, including steel, stainless steel, and bronze
  • Composite materials designed for durability and affordability

Each material offers different characteristics in appearance, weight, and cost. All caskets we offer meet professional standards for quality and care.

Choosing What Fits

Families choose caskets for many reasons, including:

  • The type of service being held
  • Cultural or faith traditions
  • Personal values and preferences
  • Budget considerations

A simple casket performs the same role as a more elaborate one. The meaning of a service comes from the people gathered and the life being honored, not from the material chosen.

Outer Burial Containers

Vaults and Grave Liners

Most cemeteries require the use of an outer burial container. This is not a personal or emotional decision, but a structural one tied to cemetery maintenance and safety.

What Is an Outer Burial Container?

An outer burial container is placed in the ground around the casket. Its purpose is to support the soil above and help prevent ground settling over time. There are two primary types:

Grave liners: These are concrete containers designed to support the weight of the ground and cemetery equipment. They meet the minimum requirements of most cemeteries.

Burial vaults: Vaults include an inner liner and are typically sealed. They offer additional protection from water and soil and are often chosen for added durability.

Please note that vaults are designed for protection, not preservation. No vault can prevent the natural process of time.

Two pieces of burial merchandise are displayed with their lids removed and set at an angle; the top vault is white with a textured exterior, while the bottom vault features a smooth gray finish.
A metallic burial vault, a dignified piece of burial merchandise, features a partially open lid with decorative silver handles and a wreath design. The speckled gray and black exterior reveals the smooth interior.

Why Cemeteries Require Them

Cemeteries require outer burial containers to maintain level grounds, ensure safety, and preserve the appearance of the cemetery for all families. Requirements vary by cemetery, and we confirm these details for you as part of the planning process.

How Families Choose

Many families select a grave liner because it meets cemetery requirements and fits their needs. Others choose a sealed vault for added protection or personal peace of mind.

There is no right or wrong choice. What matters is understanding the options and selecting what feels appropriate for your situation and budget.

Planning Ahead

Burial merchandise decisions can be made in advance or at the time of need. Many families choose to document preferences during preplanning to reduce stress later and provide clarity for loved ones.

Planning ahead does not require purchasing anything. It simply allows you to record your wishes and explore options at your own pace.

The merchandise is one part of the story. How you tell the rest is up to you.
