Iles Dunn’s Chapel

Iles Dunn's Chapel exterior

Iles Dunn’s Chapel is the most historic funeral home owned and operated by Iles. Established in 1913 and located on Grand Avenue since 1926, Dunn’s has long been recognized as one of the most elegant funeral homes in Iowa. Charles Iles acquired the funeral home from the LeRoy Dunn family in 1978, continuing a tradition of care that spans generations. The location offers a large, well-lit parking lot and full accessibility for guests with mobility needs.

Located just west of downtown Des Moines, Dunn’s serves families throughout the metro area and beyond. Its central location, easy access from major roadways, and ample on-site parking make it a convenient choice for families and guests.

A Historic Building with Lasting Presence

From the outside, Dunn’s reflects the character of a classic early-20th-century residence. Inside, the experience is defined by scale, light, and architectural detail. The heart of the building is its two-story central atrium, created by joining two historic homes into one unified skylit space. Columns frame the atrium, drawing the eye upward, while a fountain and fish pond anchor the room and provide a sense of calm as families arrive. This space sets the tone for the facility and serves as a natural gathering point before and after services. The atrium is often used for light refreshments, standing receptions, and informal gatherings. While Dunn’s does not include a traditional sit-down reception hall, the open layout allows for high-top tables and food service throughout the atrium and adjacent rooms, creating a comfortable flow for guests.

Chapel and Gathering Spaces

The chapel at Dunn’s blends historic character with modern functionality. Original chairs dating back to 1926 remain in use, with regularly updated upholstery to ensure comfort. Drapery, finishes, and lighting have been thoughtfully refreshed while preserving the room’s original feel.

At the front of the chapel, large video screens and an updated sound system support music, spoken tributes, and visual presentations. Audio coverage extends throughout the building, allowing families and guests to remain connected even when moving between spaces.

In addition to the chapel, Dunn’s offers several flexible rooms that support both privacy and connection.

These spaces are designed to adapt to each family’s needs, whether that means quiet reflection or accommodating larger visitation flows.

The East Room

The East Room, located just off the atrium, serves as a multi-purpose space. It is often used for private family viewings, small gatherings, or quiet moments before services.

Family rooms positioned near the atrium provide a private retreat during visitations. One-way glass allows families to see who is arriving without being seen themselves, giving them control over when and how they rejoin guests.

A Place with Deep Cultural Ties

Dunn’s holds a unique place in Iowa’s cultural history. Artist Grant Wood was introduced to LeRoy Dunn shortly after the funeral home moved to its current location. Wood was commissioned to paint a portrait of the atrium fountain, as well as other notable works including the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on the Capitol grounds. Original pieces were donated to the Des Moines Art Center, and replicas are displayed in the Dunn’s library today.
